The harbour
Mormugao is the main port of Goa, on India's west coast. It lies at the mouth of the Zuari River on the Arabian Sea, sheltered by a headland, beside the town of Vasco da Gama. Goa was a Portuguese possession for over four centuries until 1961.
The port has long been one of India's main outlets for iron ore mined in the Goan hinterland, and it also handles coal, general cargo and cruise ships.
Sailors find calm conditions in the dry season, but the southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas, when many small craft stop working.
