The harbour
Colombo, Sri Lanka's commercial capital, sits on the island's west coast facing the Indian Ocean, close to the main east–west shipping lanes between Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
Its harbour is artificial, protected by long breakwaters, and it works as a major transshipment hub, especially for cargo bound to and from the Indian subcontinent. Portuguese, Dutch and British rulers each used the port, and colonial buildings remain in the Fort district. Large reclaimed land for a new port city has been added beside the harbour.
During the southwest monsoon, sailors meet heavy swell on this open coast.
