The harbour
Kochi, also called Cochin, lies on the Malabar Coast of Kerala on the Arabian Sea, where a break in the coast opens into a network of lagoons and backwaters. For centuries it was a centre of the spice trade, especially pepper, visited by Arab, Chinese, Portuguese and Dutch merchants. Vasco da Gama died here in 1524.
The port, centred on the man-made Willingdon Island, handles containers at Vallarpadam and is home to Cochin Shipyard and the Indian Navy's Southern Command.
Sailors entering the harbour pass the famous Chinese fishing nets, lowered and raised on wooden frames along the shore of Fort Kochi.
