The harbour
Chennai, formerly Madras, lies on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. The English East India Company built Fort St George here in the seventeenth century, and the city grew into a centre of British India.
Because the coast is straight and open, the harbour is entirely artificial, enclosed by breakwaters. It handles containers, cars from the region's large automobile industry, and general cargo, with newer ports nearby at Ennore and Kattupalli.
Sailors notice the long Marina Beach running south of the harbour and the heavy surf of the open coast, especially during the northeast monsoon and the cyclone season.
