The harbour
Haldia lies in West Bengal on the Hooghly River, near the point where the Haldi River joins it, downstream from Kolkata. Its dock complex is part of the Kolkata port system and was developed so that larger ships could avoid the long, shallow river passage up to the city.
The port mainly handles bulk cargo such as coal, iron ore, fertilisers and petroleum, and there is an oil refinery and industrial zone nearby. Navigation on the Hooghly is difficult: strong tides, shifting sandbars and silt mean ships rely on experienced river pilots, and tidal timing matters for every arrival and departure.
