The harbour
Chittagong, also called Chattogram, is the main seaport of Bangladesh, built along the Karnaphuli River close to where it enters the Bay of Bengal. It handles the large majority of the country's foreign trade, including container exports of garments and imports of fuel, food and raw materials.
The port has been a trading harbour for many centuries, visited by Arab, Portuguese and other merchants. Ships face strong tides, river silt and limited depth, and many larger vessels unload offshore. North of the city, sailors may see the beaches at Sitakunda, where old ships are run aground to be broken up.
