The harbour
Belawan is the main seaport of Medan, the largest city on the island of Sumatra. It lies on the estuary of the Deli River on the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
The port grew in the colonial era on the export of Deli tobacco and plantation crops. Today it ships palm oil, rubber and other agricultural products from North Sumatra and handles containers and general cargo.
Sailors approaching Belawan cross heavy traffic in the strait, then follow a dredged channel through low, muddy coastline fringed with mangroves.
