The harbour
Penang is an island off the north-west coast of peninsular Malaysia, at the northern end of the Strait of Malacca. George Town, its capital, was founded by Francis Light of the British East India Company in 1786 and grew into a trading port; its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The main cargo terminals are at Butterworth on the mainland, across a narrow channel, while cruise ships berth at Swettenham Pier in George Town. Two long bridges and a ferry link the island to the mainland. Sailors notice the wooden clan jetties of George Town, stilt villages built over the water.
