The harbour
Singapore lies at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, on the Singapore Strait, which links the Strait of Malacca with the South China Sea. Its position on one of the world's busiest shipping lanes has made it one of the largest container transhipment ports and the world's leading ship refuelling centre.
Modern Singapore began as a British trading post founded by Stamford Raffles in 1819. Its container terminals are being consolidated into a large new port at Tuas in the west. Sailors here see hundreds of ships at anchor and move through strict traffic separation lanes crowded with tankers, container ships and bulk carriers.
