The harbour

Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, lies on the north coast of Java facing the Java Sea. Its main port, Tanjung Priok, is the busiest in the country, handling containers, cars and bulk goods for the most populous island in the archipelago.

As Batavia, the city was the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company in Asia. The old harbour of Sunda Kelapa is still used by traditional wooden sailing cargo ships known as pinisi, which load timber and goods for other islands. Sailors approaching Jakarta notice the crowded anchorage, heavy coastal traffic and the haze that often hangs over the low, flat shoreline.
