The harbour
Makassar lies on the southwest coast of Sulawesi, facing the Makassar Strait, one of the main sea routes between the Pacific and Indian oceans.
It was the seat of the powerful Gowa sultanate before the Dutch East India Company took control in the seventeenth century; Fort Rotterdam still stands on the waterfront. Makassan seafarers sailed for centuries to northern Australia to gather sea cucumbers. Today the port handles containers and inter-island cargo and is a gateway to eastern Indonesia.
At the traditional Paotere harbour, a sailor can still see wooden pinisi schooners loading cargo.
