The harbour

Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, lies on the north-east coast of Java beside the Madura Strait. Its port, Tanjung Perak, is one of the busiest in the country and serves as a hub for eastern Indonesia, handling containers, bulk goods and inter-island passenger ships.

The city is home to the main base of the Indonesian Navy and a large state shipyard. In 1945 it was the scene of a major battle in Indonesia's struggle for independence, still remembered as Heroes' Day. Ships approach through a narrow, shallow channel in the strait, and the long Suramadu Bridge links the city to the island of Madura.
