The harbour
Port Hedland lies on the Pilbara coast of Western Australia, facing the Indian Ocean. It is one of the world's largest bulk export ports, shipping enormous quantities of iron ore mined inland, along with salt, manganese and lithium.
Extremely long ore trains bring the ore to the port, where huge stockpiles and loaders feed bulk carriers. Ships use a long dredged channel and must work around a very large tidal range. Sailors notice the red earth and red dust that colour everything, the intense heat, and the risk of tropical cyclones in summer.
