The harbour
Fremantle lies at the mouth of the Swan River on the Indian Ocean coast of Western Australia, serving as the port for Perth. It was founded in 1829 with the Swan River Colony, and later convicts built Fremantle Prison, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The inner harbour handles containers, vehicles and cruise ships, while bulk cargoes such as grain and fuel go through the outer harbour at Kwinana. The town hosted the America's Cup yacht races in 1987. Sailors know the strong southwesterly afternoon sea breeze in summer, locally called the Fremantle Doctor.
