The harbour
Adelaide's port lies on the Port River and the eastern shore of Gulf St Vincent in South Australia. Port Adelaide grew up as the colony's gateway after its founding in the 1830s, and the deeper Outer Harbor near the gulf now handles container ships and bulk carriers.
The port's main exports come from the surrounding farmland: grain, wine and other agricultural produce, along with minerals. The gulf is sheltered but shallow in places, so ships follow dredged channels. The Port River is a protected dolphin sanctuary, and resident dolphins are a familiar sight to crews moving up towards the old inner harbour.
