The harbour
The Port of Brisbane lies at the mouth of the Brisbane River on Moreton Bay, on the coast of southeast Queensland, with the city itself upstream along the river's bends.
It is one of Australia's main container ports and also handles imported cars, fuel, grain and coal exports, with a dedicated cruise terminal near the river mouth.
Moreton Bay is sheltered by the large sand islands of Moreton and North Stradbroke, but it is shallow and full of shifting sandbanks. Ships follow a long, dredged and buoyed channel across the bay, so a sailor spends a good while inside the bay before reaching the berths.
