The harbour
Townsville lies on Cleveland Bay on the coast of north Queensland, facing the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef.
It is the largest city in northern Australia and a major port for minerals, including zinc, lead and copper from the Mount Isa region, as well as sugar, fertiliser and cattle. It is also home to a large military base and to research institutions studying the reef.
Magnetic Island lies across the bay, and the red rock of Castle Hill rises above the city. Sailors should note that this coast lies in the tropical cyclone zone in summer.
