The harbour
Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, lies on the southern coast of New Guinea, facing the Gulf of Papua and the Coral Sea. It is named after the British naval officer John Moresby, who charted the harbour in the 1870s.
During the Second World War it was a key Allied base, defended by troops fighting along the Kokoda Track. Today the port handles containers, fuel and imports, and a liquefied natural gas plant stands nearby.
Sailors enter through a passage in the barrier reef, and near the harbour see Hanuabada, a village of houses built on stilts over the water.
