The harbour
Nouméa is the capital of New Caledonia, a French territory in the south-west Pacific. It sits on a peninsula on the south-west coast of the main island, Grande Terre, inside one of the largest coral lagoons in the world, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The port's main export is nickel, mined on the island and processed in a large smelter near the city, and Nouméa is also a regular stop for cruise ships. Ships must cross the barrier reef through a pass, and the tall white Amédée lighthouse, an iron tower shipped out from France in the nineteenth century, marks the main approach.
