The harbour
Suva, the capital of Fiji, lies on a peninsula on the southeast coast of Viti Levu, the country's largest island. Its harbour is protected by a coral barrier reef with a gap that allows ships to enter.
It is Fiji's main port for imports and inter-island shipping, and a base for tuna fishing fleets. Suva is also a regional centre, home to the main campus of the University of the South Pacific.
Sailors find a green, rainy town, much wetter than the western side of the island, with the sharp volcanic peak known as Joske's Thumb rising inland.
