The harbour
Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, lies at the southern tip of the North Island on a large natural harbour opening onto Cook Strait. Its port handles containers, logs and other cargo, and it is the North Island terminal for the ferries that cross Cook Strait to Picton in the South Island.
Wellington is known as one of the windiest cities in the world because Cook Strait funnels the winds. In 1968 the ferry Wahine was wrecked in a violent storm at the harbour entrance. Sailors must take care with the narrow entrance and the dangerous Barrett Reef, often in strong winds and steep seas.
