The harbour
Hobart, capital of Tasmania, sits on the estuary of the Derwent River in the far south of Australia, under the slopes of kunanyi / Mount Wellington.
Founded as a British settlement in the early nineteenth century, it is one of Australia's oldest cities, with sandstone warehouses still lining Salamanca Place. The deep, sheltered harbour handles cruise ships, fishing boats and general cargo, and Hobart is a home port for Antarctic research and supply vessels.
Every year the Sydney to Hobart yacht race finishes here. Sailors coming in from the Southern Ocean welcome the calm of the Derwent after rough seas outside.
