The harbour
Lyttelton is the port of Christchurch, on the South Island of New Zealand. Its harbour lies inside the drowned crater of an ancient volcano on Banks Peninsula, opening to the Pacific, and is surrounded by steep, bare hills that separate the town from the city.
The port handles containers, coal, logs, fuel and cruise ships. Early Antarctic expeditions led by Scott and Shackleton departed from here, and the town was badly damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. Sailors notice how the harbour narrows between high crater walls, with a road tunnel cutting through the hills to Christchurch.
