The harbour
Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, spreads across a narrow isthmus between two harbours: the Waitematā, opening east onto the Hauraki Gulf and the Pacific, and the Manukau on the Tasman Sea side.
The Waitematā waterfront handles containers, imported cars and cruise ships, and the city is one of the country's main gateways. Known as the City of Sails, it has a huge recreational boating community and has hosted the America's Cup.
Entering from the gulf, a sailor passes the symmetrical cone of Rangitoto, a young volcanic island, before the Harbour Bridge and city towers come into view.
