The harbour
Sydney, Australia's largest city, faces the Tasman Sea on the country's southeast coast. Its harbour, Port Jackson, is one of the world's great natural harbours; the British First Fleet settled at Sydney Cove in 1788.
Most cargo now moves through Port Botany on Botany Bay, south of the city, which handles containers, fuel and bulk liquids. Port Jackson remains the home of cruise ships, ferries and naval vessels. Sailors entering the harbour between the high sandstone cliffs of the Heads find the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge waiting at the heart of the city.
