The harbour
The Port of Melbourne lies at the mouth of the Yarra River at the northern end of Port Phillip Bay in Victoria. It is Australia's busiest container port and also handles cars, fuel and bulk cargo. Ferries run across Bass Strait to Tasmania.
The city grew rapidly during the gold rush of the 1850s, when ships brought tens of thousands of hopeful miners.
Every ship entering the bay must pass Port Phillip Heads through The Rip, a narrow entrance with strong tidal currents and steep seas that has wrecked many vessels. Pilots board outside the Heads to guide ships in.
