The harbour
Darwin is the capital of Australia's Northern Territory, on Port Darwin off the Beagle Gulf of the Timor Sea. It is Australia's closest major port to Southeast Asia.
The port exports live cattle and minerals, supports offshore oil and gas projects, and handles supplies for the territory. The city was bombed by Japanese aircraft in 1942 and largely destroyed by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Day 1974.
Sailors must plan around a large tidal range that leaves wide flats exposed, violent storms in the wet season, and saltwater crocodiles in the surrounding creeks.
