The harbour
Port Klang lies on the Strait of Malacca on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia, in Selangor state, serving as the sea gateway to Kuala Lumpur.
Formerly called Port Swettenham, it is Malaysia's largest port, with two main terminals, Northport and Westport, handling a large volume of containers, including transshipment between Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
The surrounding coast is low and lined with mangrove islands and river channels. The Strait of Malacca is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, so a sailor approaching must cross or join a dense stream of passing ships.
