The harbour
Cái Mép is a deep-water port complex on the Thị Vải River in Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province, southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Together with the neighbouring Thị Vải terminals it was developed to take container ships too large for the river ports of Saigon.
It is southern Vietnam's main gateway for direct container services to Europe and North America, carrying goods from the factories of the Ho Chi Minh City region.
Sailors approaching from the South China Sea pass Vũng Tàu and enter a winding river lined with mangroves, part of the wetlands that stretch toward the Cần Giờ forest.
