The harbour
Laem Chabang lies on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Thailand, in Chonburi Province, between Bangkok and Pattaya. It was developed from the late twentieth century as Thailand's main deep-sea port, because the older river port in Bangkok could not take large modern ships.
It is now the country's busiest container port and a major export point for cars and electronics made in the industrial estates of the Eastern Seaboard. The port is modern, with long straight basins and terminals. Sailors approaching it see the busy anchorage in the gulf and the town of Si Racha and its offshore islands nearby.
