The harbour
Da Nang lies on a wide bay on Vietnam's central coast, at the mouth of the Hàn River on the South China Sea. The Sơn Trà Peninsula shelters the bay from the north and east, giving one of the best natural harbours in central Vietnam.
The port handles containers and general cargo for central Vietnam and neighbouring Laos, and receives cruise ships whose passengers visit Hội An and Huế. During the Vietnam War it was a major American base.
Sailors see the forested heights of Sơn Trà and, to the north, the mountains of the Hải Vân Pass dropping steeply into the sea.
