The harbour
Hong Kong lies at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta on the South China Sea. Its deep, sheltered Victoria Harbour, between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, made it a major trading port after it came under British rule in the nineteenth century. It returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 as a special administrative region.
The port is one of the largest container hubs in the world, with its main terminals at Kwai Tsing, and it is a centre for ship registration and finance. Sailors notice the dense traffic of ferries, barges and launches crossing the harbour, including the green and white Star Ferry, beneath a wall of skyscrapers.
