The harbour
Shenzhen lies in southern China on the Pearl River Delta, just north of Hong Kong. Once a small border town, it became one of China's first Special Economic Zones around 1980 and grew into a huge city known for electronics and manufacturing.
Its port, with major terminals at Yantian on Dapeng Bay and at Shekou and Chiwan on the western side, is one of the busiest container ports in the world, linking South China's factories to global markets. Sailors notice the dense ship traffic, the forested hills around Yantian and the typhoon risk in summer.
