The harbour
Kaohsiung lies on the south-west coast of Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait. It is the island's largest port and one of the major container hubs of East Asia, and the city is also a centre of heavy industry, with steelworks, petrochemical plants and shipyards around the harbour.
The harbour is a long natural lagoon protected from the sea by the narrow island of Cijin, and it has two entrances. The older northern entrance is a tight gap between Cijin and the wooded hill of Shoushan, so ships pass close to both shores, with small ferries shuttling back and forth across the channel.
