The harbour
Shanghai lies at the mouth of the Yangtze River, China's longest river, on the East China Sea. It has been the busiest container port in the world for many years.
Much of the container traffic now uses Yangshan, a deep-water port built on offshore islands and linked to the mainland by the long Donghai Bridge. The older wharves along the Huangpu River grew after Shanghai became a treaty port in 1842, and the Bund waterfront still recalls that era.
Sailors face brown, silt-laden water, strong tidal currents and extremely dense traffic in the Yangtze estuary approaches.
