The harbour
Ningbo lies on the coast of Zhejiang province at the southern side of Hangzhou Bay. Combined with nearby Zhoushan, it forms the Ningbo-Zhoushan port, one of the busiest ports in the world by both cargo and containers.
Deep water among the islands allows very large ships to bring in iron ore, crude oil and coal, and container lines connect it with every continent. Ningbo was a trading port for centuries and was opened to foreign trade as a treaty port in 1842.
Sailors approaching pass through the Zhoushan Archipelago, a maze of hundreds of islands crowded with fishing boats and coastal shipping.
