The harbour
Hakata is the port of Fukuoka on Hakata Bay, on the north coast of Kyushu, facing the Korea Strait and the Asian mainland.
For centuries it was Japan's main gateway to Korea and China, and both Mongol invasion fleets of the thirteenth century landed in this bay; remains of the defensive stone wall built against them can still be seen. Today the port handles containers, cruise ships and fast ferries and hydrofoils to Busan.
The bay is well sheltered by the long sandspit of Uminonakamichi and the island of Shikanoshima. Hakata is also famous for its pork-bone ramen.
