The harbour

Osaka lies at the mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay, at the eastern end of the Seto Inland Sea. For centuries it was Japan's great merchant city, collecting rice and goods from across the country, which earned it the nickname "the nation's kitchen".

Today the port handles containers and general cargo, and long-distance ferries sail to Kyushu and Shikoku. Kobe, another major port, lies just across the bay.

Sailors entering the port see the giant Tempozan Ferris wheel on the waterfront, and the bay is crowded with ferries, coasters and fishing boats.
