The harbour

Ulsan lies on the southeast coast of South Korea, facing the East Sea (Sea of Japan), north of Busan.

It is the country's leading industrial city: home to one of the world's largest shipyards, a huge car factory with its own export docks, and major oil refineries and petrochemical plants. Its port handles crude oil, petroleum products and chemicals in very large volumes, as well as vehicles and general cargo. Before industrialisation, the area was known for whaling, and prehistoric rock carvings of whales survive nearby.

From the sea, a sailor sees giant shipyard cranes and ships under construction along the shore.
