The harbour

Vladivostok lies on the Golden Horn Bay at the southern tip of the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula, on the Peter the Great Gulf of the Sea of Japan. Founded as a Russian military outpost in 1860, it is the headquarters of Russia's Pacific Fleet and the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The port handles containers, fish, cars, coal and general cargo, and it is the main gateway for Russia's Pacific trade. Sailors notice the hilly city around the bay, the long cable-stayed bridges over the Golden Horn and to Russky Island, and the icy conditions in parts of the bay in winter.
