The harbour
Incheon lies on the west coast of South Korea on the Yellow Sea, serving as the main sea gateway to Seoul.
The coast here has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, with wide mudflats exposed at low tide, so the inner harbour is entered through lock gates that keep ships afloat. Newer container terminals have been built farther out. Ferries run to several Chinese ports. In 1950 United Nations forces made a surprise amphibious landing here during the Korean War.
A sailor must time movements carefully with the tides and watch the strong currents among the offshore islands.
