The harbour
Dalian lies at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in northeast China, where the Yellow Sea meets the entrance to the Bohai Sea.
As an ice-free port it is the main sea outlet for China's northeast, handling containers, crude oil, grain and vehicles. It also has major shipyards; China's first aircraft carrier was refitted here. Russia leased the area at the end of the nineteenth century and Japan later controlled it, and the nearby naval harbour of Lüshun is the former Port Arthur.
From the water a sailor sees a hilly, indented coast with many bays and offshore islands.
