The harbour
Tianjin lies on the Bohai Sea at the mouth of the Hai River in northern China, and its port serves as the main sea gateway to Beijing.
It became a treaty port in the nineteenth century, with foreign concessions whose buildings still stand in the city. Today it is one of China's largest ports, handling containers, vehicles, crude oil, coal and iron ore, much of it on land reclaimed from the sea. In 2015 a massive chemical explosion struck the port area.
The coast here is flat and shallow. In cold winters the Bohai can freeze near the shore, and sailors may meet sea ice.
