The harbour
Qingdao lies on the southern coast of the Shandong Peninsula, at the mouth of Jiaozhou Bay on the Yellow Sea.
Germany held the area as a concession from 1898 until the First World War, and the brewery it founded made Tsingtao beer famous; red-roofed German-era buildings still line parts of the old town. Today Qingdao is one of China's largest ports, handling containers, iron ore, crude oil and other bulk cargo, and it hosted the sailing events of the 2008 Olympics.
A sailor notices the long Zhanqiao pier reaching into the sea and the hilly, green coastline.
