The harbour

Tomakomai lies on the Pacific coast of southern Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island. It is one of the busiest ports in Hokkaido, with an industrial harbour dug into the flat coastline.

The port is a key ferry hub, with overnight services linking Hokkaido to Honshu ports, and it handles containers, cars, fuel and bulk cargo. The city is known for its paper mills and other industry, and the port is close to Hokkaido's main airport. Sailors notice the cool climate, frequent sea fog in summer and the active volcano Mount Tarumae rising to the northwest.
