The harbour
The Port of Tokyo lies at the head of Tokyo Bay, alongside the neighbouring ports of Yokohama, Kawasaki and Chiba. Together they serve the world's largest metropolitan area, and Tokyo itself handles huge volumes of containers and consumer goods.
When it was still called Edo, the city was shaken by the arrival of Commodore Perry's American ships in 1853, after which small fortress islands, the Daiba, were built in the bay. Today the redeveloped Odaiba area stands there.
Sailors entering through the narrow Uraga Channel meet some of the densest ship traffic in the world, then pass under the Rainbow Bridge.
