The harbour

Nagoya lies at the head of Ise Bay on the Pacific coast of central Honshu. It is the heart of Japan's car industry, and Toyota and its suppliers are based in the surrounding region.

The port is one of Japan's busiest and is the country's leading port for car exports, with large car carriers loading at its terminals. It also handles containers, iron ore, coal and other raw materials for the region's factories.

Sailors entering Ise Bay pass a coastline lined with industrial plants. The bay is exposed to typhoons in late summer and autumn, which can bring storm surges.
