The harbour
Xiamen lies on an island and the surrounding mainland coast of Fujian province, facing the Taiwan Strait. Known to Europeans as Amoy, it was one of the treaty ports opened in 1842 and an important centre of the tea trade; the English word "tea" comes from the local Hokkien word.
Today it is a major container port and a special economic zone. The small island of Gulangyu, with its colonial villas, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sailors approaching can see the Kinmen islands, governed from Taiwan, lying just a few kilometres off the coast.
