The harbour
Haiphong is northern Vietnam's main seaport, on the Cam River in the Red River delta near the Gulf of Tonkin, about 100 kilometres east of Hanoi. Developed as a port under French colonial rule, it has long been the capital region's link to the sea.
The port handles containers, general cargo and bulk goods, and newer deep-water terminals at Lach Huyen allow larger ships to call. The surrounding area hosts many factories and industrial zones. Sailors notice the muddy, shallow waters of the delta and the limestone islands of Cat Ba and Ha Long Bay rising from the sea nearby.
