The harbour
Manila, the capital of the Philippines, lies on Manila Bay at the mouth of the Pasig River on the west coast of Luzon. Under Spanish rule it was the Asian end of the Manila galleon trade with Acapulco, and the walled city of Intramuros still stands near the waterfront.
The port is the country's busiest, with international container terminals and the North Harbor serving inter-island ferries and domestic cargo. The bay is large and well sheltered, with the island of Corregidor guarding its entrance. Sailors often remark on Manila Bay's famous sunsets and on the heavy traffic of ships at anchor.
